Amoeba Music Has Music Lovers Talking

By: Allessandra Lopez

Amoeba Music has music lovers talking.  With live performances, numerous records, and every DVD imaginable, it is no wonder the company has attracted large crowds.

Amoeba Music is a company that opened in 1990 for independent music lovers. Amoeba Music stores are located in Hollywood, San Francisco and Berkeley. Almost anything and everything music related can be found at one of the locations. From underground rock music to classic jazz, there isn’t one type of genre that is left behind.

Even though I am a fan of music, I don’t think I would find myself in Amoeba Music that often.  The second I walked in, I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were so many vinyl records it was hard to keep track. While some names sounded familiar, there were others that I hadn't even heard of.

This store can be overwhelming to be in.  People are constantly coming in and out of the store, there are long lines and aisles can get pretty crowded.  There is just so much to see and not enough time. It’s almost like Disneyland but I don’t think I’d have the patience to be in there all day.

Shopping hours on end for CD’s is not my favorite thing to do, but I definitely wouldn’t mind going to Amoeba Music to see some of my favorite bands play. Instead of having to figure out where your favorite artists are playing, one can simply just go to the Amoeba Music website and find an event calendar.  The event calendar has a list of bands who will be playing during the month and any charity work coming up.

Bands like Death Cab For Cutie, The Drums, Silversun Pickups and  Motion City Soundtrack have all performed at Amoeba at no costs to their fans. Amoeba is to also be admired for their dedication to finding performers who are not mainstream. Amoeba is open to allowing independent artists show off their talent as well .There is no better place to rock out to your favorite bands in a store that revolves around music.

Amoeba is a great place for listening to music, but there are others who believe Amoeba is a great store all around.

One person who loves everything Amoeba has to offer is music lover Rachel Perez. Perez admires the fact that Amoeba Music is so diverse. “Everyone doesn’t have the same taste in music, so it’s nice to know that there is a record store that supports all of its listeners”.

Perez has been to Amoeba Music quite a few times. When she goes, she tries to clear her schedule because she likes to spend hours in the store at a time. “It’s not a store where you can quickly go in and get out”, said Perez. “ There are so many things to see, it’s almost impossible to leave after just an hour”.

Besides finding music that curbs her appetite, Perez also loves going to Amoeba to meet people who have the similar taste in music. “Music connects people on a deeper level. You can find out a lot about someone just by the type of music they listen too.”

For individuals who are looking for good music, Amoeba Music is the place to be. Whether one needs to find a record or a DVD, it is bound to be here.

Even if an individual shops in the store for fifteen minutes or stays for three, it is sure to be an experience. “Amoeba is the type of place that you either love or hate”, said Perez. Regardless of which one you choose, you’ll never forget the name.
